New Clinical Research Centre to open @ The Garth Surgery

A new £1,000,000 centre for commercial clinical research is set to open in Guisborough,
providing more opportunities for people in Tees Valley to access new and innovative
treatments. It will be one of 14 new Primary Care Commercial Research Delivery Centres
(PC-CRDC) across the country, funded by the National Institute for Health and Care
Research (NIHR) for 3 years to bring more cutting-edge clinical trials to local communities.
Aligned with the government’s health and growth missions, the PC-CRDCs will support the
shift of research and care from hospitals into community settings. They will enhance access
to clinical trials for people across England, particularly those in under-served groups and
communities experiencing the greatest burden of ill health.
The Tees Valley PC-CRDC will be based at the Garth Surgery in Guisborough, with nearby
Springwood Surgery, Riverside Medical Practice and Norton Medical Centre in
Stockton-on-Tees as initial spoke sites. The new PC-CRDC will work closely with regional
primary care networks and federations, NHS trusts, and universities, as well as community
partners such as places of worship, charities, community pharmacies and residential care
homes.
Dr Teik Goh, Director of the NIHR Tees Valley PC-CRDC, said: “Our vision is to give
everyone in Tees Valley the chance to take part in research that matters—improving lives
and opportunities for all. By working together, more people will be able to take part in
meaningful research—improving both local health and the regional economy.”
The centre’s leadership team include Dr Teik Goh of the Garth Surgery, Dr Yusuf Soni of the
Riverside Medical Practice in Stockton-on-Tees, Dr Eugene Tang of Newcastle University, Dr
Michael Smith of Springwood Surgery, and Dr Jo Hodgson of Norton Medical Centre.
