Other Ways to Order Your Prescriptions

Repeat prescriptions can be obtained by ticking which medication you require on the tear off slip on the right hand side of your prescription. To avoid waste please tick only the medications you need. You can then either:

  • Return your the computerised reordering slip to the surgery.
  • Completing a blank slip at the surgery.

Most prescriptions can also now be sent electronically to your nominated pharmacy.

Due to the possibility of errors, requests for repeat prescriptions will not be taken over the telephone.

When will my prescription be ready?

All orders for repeat prescriptions will be ready for collection from the surgery 2 working days after they are ordered. For example if a request is received Monday before 4pm the prescription will be ready to collect from the surgery on Wednesday after 1pm.

If however, you collect your prescription at a pharmacy then it will be ready for processing at the pharmacy 3 working days after it was ordered.

If you have any queries please contact any member of staff at the practice who will be pleased to help you.

Electronic Prescription Service (EPS)

The Garth Surgery offers the Electronic Prescription Service (EPS), which allows you to choose or nominate a pharmacy to collect your medicines or appliances from. The Garth Surgery then sends your prescription electronically to the place you have selected.

This means:

  • If you collect your repeat prescription from your GP Surgery, you will not have to visit your GP Practice to collect your prescription, saving time.
  • You will have more choice about where to get your medicines from because they can be collected from a pharmacy near to where you live, work or shop.
  • You may not have to wait as long because your repeat prescriptions can be prepared before you arrive at the pharmacy.

For further details please contact the pharmacy you wish to nominate.

Medication Reviews

Repeat Prescriptions are reviewed at least once a year by a doctor, nurse or pharmacist. You may be asked to attend for blood tests or a review of your condition in person or by telephone. If you have any queries about your medication please discuss this with the doctor or practice pharmacist.

Good Medication Management is Important

Please preempt ordering prescriptions to avoid medication running out.

Order your prescription when you have 5 to 7 days worth of medication left.

It is good practice that repeat medication is regularly reviewed so that you get optimum care. Please make note of the review date and make an appointment to see the doctor.

If you are going on holiday you should take a list of your medication with you. Ensure you have enough medication to cover your holiday. Some countries also need a doctor's letter to explain the medication. Check with your travel agent.

If you have elderly relatives, ensure that they have an adequate supply of their medication.

Useful Information

Please do not order a repeat prescription more than seven days before it is due as the prescription cannot be processed. If you have a reason to require your medication earlier, please make sure to tell us to avoid disappointment.

Each drug has two names; the generic and the brand name. Where possible, we use the generic name because this is usually much cheaper for the health service. Due to this, you may notice a change in colour, shape or size of your drug. Do not be concerned by this, you are still receiving the same drug of the same quality, it is only the appearance that has altered. Talk to your pharmacist if you have any questions about this.

Please book your medications review appointment at least ten days before your medication runs out.

Prescription Charges and Exemptions

The NHS prescription charge is a flat rate amount which successive Governments have thought it reasonable to charge for those who cannot afford to pay for their medicines. Prescription prepayment certificates (PPCs) offer real savings for people who need a lot of medication.
